what is kava?
Kava is the root of a pepper plant (Piper methysticum) native to the Pacific Islands. At the Patch, we serve our kava the traditional way: as a tea and among friends. Kava is a nerve-soother, eases social anxiety, and promotes general well-being. It’s also non-intoxicating, so you can enjoy it without regret.
what is a kava bar?
A kava bar is just like your traditional bar but without alcohol. Whatever you’re up to, the Patch is a Third Space dedicated to you and your whims. Join in the morning alone with a book or at night with friends and a board game; bring your computer to work or some art supplies to unwind. Get cozy and stay awhile.
the big backyard
Work in progress! The Patch takes its name from our 8,000 square foot backyard, which, over time and through permaculture principles, will transform into a thriving food forest.
As of August 2026, the backyard is just starting to sprout, with plans for more natives, fruit trees, and market garden edibles coming in 2027. Our vision is to create an urban oasis in the heart of Southside where the community can watch (and help!) a working food forest grow and flourish.

While kava is our go-to drink, we also take great pride in making excellent coffee, homemade herbal teas (with seasonal specialties), and from-scratch syrups. Those syrups are used to concoct a delicious lineup of kava cocktails too. If you’re planning to stay a while—and we hope you do!—you can grab a bite from a small assortment of pastries from our friends at Bread & Butter.

Do I need to be 21 to drink kava?
No, but you do need to be 18, and we check IDs for anyone who appears underage.Can I bring my kids?
Yes! But please know that there are no children-specific activities at the Patch—although we think being in the backyard is a kid’s activity unto itself.Can I bring my dogs?
Yes! But they must be on a leash at all times, including outside. We also ask that you pick up after your pup to keep the backyard looking fresh.Who owns the Patch?
Wife and husband team, Ashley and Chris, who spent more than 10 years working at and frequenting kava bars around Tampa, Florida. They fell in love with the kava bar community—a community that represented all walks of life—and dreamed of one day bringing the concept to Tennessee, where Chris’s family lives. You’ll see Ashley and Chris at the Patch just about every day, along with their canine sidekicks, Navi and Ori.
